Same Same - Thai - Roscoe Village
Main Post: Same Same - Thai - Roscoe Village
Top Comment: My wife and I recently moved in the area and have been eating our way down Roscoe Village. We had passed by this place, Same Same , a few times, and we finally decided to stop by last night. And I wish we had gone sooner because it was quite good. First off, it’s just a unassuming joint right off Roscoe and easily mistaken as just another bar/quick casual spot like many others next to it. Decor inside though was pretty great, with a bar literally snapped like a Thai beach hut. We sat in the back patio, which was very nice. And as one should do, we started with some cocktails. I got a Mai Tai and my wife got their Short Round, which was was kind of a play on a whiskey sour with mezcal and pineapple. Both were well made and got us in a groovy mood. Got some dumplings to start which were tasty. Super crispy outside and tender on the inside. Filling was a pork and lemongrass filling which was awesome. Paired well with that Mai Tai! The Thai fried chicken was incredible. Dredged in a cumin/coriander/garlic batter and fried perfectly. Served with sticky rice and fried shallots... my wife and we’re just in silence with the occasional moan of pleasure eating this thing... The Thai ribs were delectable. Fall of the bone tender with a nice ginger/honey glaze. I don’t know what was in the sauce, but it was great. And then the pad Thai came... oh baby... I’ve been sorely disappointed by many a pad Thai in this city and this one did not disappoint. I can tell they use real deal tamarind because it tasted very fresh. Not too sweet and not too salty. Service was great. It was one dude who was juggling the entire back porch area, and, man, he was just the nicest guy- even when having to deal with a table that subbed out pretty much everything under the sun and a table who didn’t understand the concept of how to order food in order haha again still super nice and kept us well lubricated with drinks ;) Price wise, the place wasn’t bad. Not to say it was outrageously priced but our total bill was $100 before tip for 1 main, 3 apps, 3 cocktails, and a beer. Definitely priced higher than your average Thai takeout spot, but I think the quality and service are well worth it. Overall, just a chill neighborhood spot for surprisingly great Thai food and cocktails! Will definitely be back to try the rest of their menu. 4 out of 5 Malort shots.
If I tell people " Same same but different" do they understand this?
Main Post:
Since " same same but different" is used by Thai people who want to describe "X" that is almost identical to "Y" so they say same same but different
Like Orange and Tangerine are same same but different.
I know there are many foreigners who travel to Thailand they probably understand this but what about those who never have been to Thailand, do they understand?
Top Comment: I have heard "same but different" used fairly often but not "same same but different". I think most people will understand what you mean.
